The idea behind this low poly model in keeping with a fantasy look was to create a block out and refine various objects to represent the researched items such as the iron boss for the centre, with the rivets and nails to hold the boss in place. Before this low poly base was finished, more ideas came to mind so a curved thin cylinder was incorporated, alongside extrusions from the boss to extend along the curve to wrap around the rim. The pointed rivets were moved from the edges of the boss to follow the extrusions (or brace) to give the impression of a secure construction. More parts were added to the underside to mirror the impression of a secure, strong construction.

After an addition of a handle aligned with the strap in the centre, a duplicate of the block out was made with more edge loops added in places where shape and silhouette needed to be retained when subdividing in ZBrush, to create high poly sculpting as a base for textures.

At this point, looking at what had been created was considered a block out with around 3700 polygons before edge loops were added. I didn't consider that count to be suitable for a low poly mesh for use in the baking process further in the production, therefore time was planned in to retopologise in ZBrush and further in Maya to create the low poly model for baking.
